ずっと前に、自転車の中野浩一が「競輪界のトップレーサーには良いやつしかいない」というようなことを言っていた。これは「トップになる人間にはそれなりの人間性が求められる」……といった精神論などでは全然なくて、もっと実際的な話だ。

というのも、競輪というのは、「勝つこと」は難しいけれど、「誰かを勝たせないようにする」のは比較的簡単なのである。ラインを作って走ることの必然性から、反則などしなくても、誰かを二着以下に沈めることは問題なくできるのだ。

だから、誰かから嫌われるような性格では、どうしたってトップに行けないのである。結果、勝つ選手は誰からも好かれる良い人間に限られてくる。「あいつになら負けてもしょうがないな」と周りから思われるくらいでないと、競輪界のトップに立つことは難しいのだ
